SKINCARE FACTS EVERYBODY SHOULD KNOW!!!

WHAT THEY DON’T TELL YOU ABOUT SKINCARE

Today we are going highlight a few things we overlook when we begin our skincare journey. A few of these issues lead to unrealistic expectations which affects how we look at skincare in general. Let’s get to it!

1.     THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT SKIN!!!

I often hear people talking about wanting “the perfect skin” which leaves me wondering what is perfect skin? I mean what does this even mean? Who sets the standards for perfect skin? What does perfect skin entail? Truth is, perfect skin does not exist. How would you even begin measuring perfect when it comes to skincare?

What happens when you get obsessed with chasing perfect skin is that you set impossible standards for yourself which leads to jumping from one product to another every day. This ends up doing more damage to your skin. The goal should ALWAYS be healthy skin. Focus on the health of your skin. Focus on a healthy skin barrier. Focus on keeping your skin hydrated. Focus on keeping your skin moisturized. Focus on how healthy your skin feels. Focus on protecting your skin. Don’t obsess too much on the “imperfections”. More often you find that if you focus on your skin’s health everything else works itself out with time.

2.     THERE IS NO DESTINATION WHEN IT COMES TO SKINCARE

This is one of our most frequently asked question… “for how long do I need to use these products”… “if I stop using these products are there side effects?”… “once I get the results can I stop using the products?”… am curious, once you stop what happens? Do you just go back to not taking care of your skin or what exactly does stopping mean?

This is another main issue. Most people approach skincare as a one-time-thing where you arrive at ‘perfect skin’ and then just stop taking care of your skin. I hate to break it to your but it doesn’t work like that. You don’t arrive when it comes to skincare. There are times when your skin is at its best and other times it just starts acting up. You don’t get to stop taking care of your skin once you achieve your skin goals. Think of it like working out. You don’t get to stop working out after you reach your weight goal and just go back to eating crap. It doesn’t work like that. Skincare is a lifetime commitment. Just like you need food and water for your body to be healthy your skin needs to be nourished too. You cannot wake up one day and decide to just stop eating because your body is healthy. Same thing with skincare. It is a lifetime commitment.

There is no destination. You don’t ‘arrive’ at perfect skin and just stop taking care of your skin. It is a lifetime commitment.

3.     YOUR SKIN WILL NOT ALWAYS BE AT ITS BEST

Am sure we would all love to just always have flawless skin every single day. But unfortunately it doesn’t work like that. On some days you will wake up with flawless skin. On some other days your skin will just act up. Could be hormones, could be poor sleeping habits, could be food, could be alcohol, could be dirt, could be stress, could be medication etc. There is about a million things that affect the state of your skin. Most of these things we don’t have control over.

This is why it is important to focus more on the health of your skin instead of chasing that ‘perfect skin’ because that doesn’t exist. Your skin will always have those moments that annoy you.

4.     RESULTS DON’T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT

The other day I interacted with a client who claimed that she had used vitamin C serum for one month and her dark spots had not faded so she was demanding an explanation. Let’s not get into how vitamin C serum alone cannot fade your dark spots and chat about the timeline for now. Let’s be realistic, how long do dark spots take to form? Certainly not a month. So why would you expect a product that fades them all in a month?! This is not realistic. It is possible to see progress in a month, but it is certainly not possible to achieve a clear skin in a month. Especially if you are just starting out your skincare journey.

This blog is not meant to scare anybody away it’s just meant to bring awareness for some of these issues to avoid unrealistic expectations.
