INTRODUCTION TO SKINCARE PRODUCTS
Are you just beginning your skincare routine and are not sure where to start? This article is meant to offer a guideline of what products to start with and how to pick the products that best work for you.
Let’s begin with the skincare basics. Am sure you have heard people talk about things like cleansers, toners, serums, essences, masks and you might be wondering what these are and exactly how to introduce them to your routine. So we will begin by defining exactly what these are and giving you examples of the particular items from our range.
1. CLEANSERS
Every skincare routine must begin with a cleanser. There is no routine without a cleanser. Basically cleansers are products that cleanse your skin. To cleanse is to clean. These are products that are responsible for removing dirt from your skin. There are different kinds of cleansers such as cream cleansers, foaming cleansers, gel cleansers etc. From our range we have handmade soaps. We have different soaps that are created for different skin types and different skin concerns. Examples are
Turmeric & Liwa soap, Activated charcoal & Tea Tree soap, Goatmilk soap etc. See our full range of cleansers
hereCleansing is a mandatory step of skincare. You need to cleanse your face at least once a day in order to promote a healthy skin. Cleansing twice a day is also okay.
2. TONERS & ESSENCES
Facial toners are what follow after cleansing the face. Toners are mainly used to hydrate the skin, balance the skin’s pH, reduce appearance of pores, and some toners also contain active ingredients that help target different skin concerns. Toners are an important step of skincare (but not mandatory) because the help restore the skin pH back to normal after cleansing. Some cleansers tend to offset the skin’s natural pH balance and this could lead to skin barrier destruction. A toner will help restore the skin’s natural pH.
Essences can function as both a toner and a serum. They help nourish the skin and are normally applied after toners, before serums.
3. SERUMS / TREATMENTS
Just like the name suggests, serums are used as treatments for different skincare concerns. Serums usually have different active ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol, salicylic acid, niacinamide etc. These active ingredients are added to the serum in different percentages with the aim of targeting different skincare concerns.
Serums are usually an important step of skincare, but not a mandatory one. Other than targeting different skincare concerns they help keep the skin hydrated.
From our range we have a
Vitamin C Serum made with 20% vitamin C (ascorbic acid), hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5, rosehip extract and green tea extracts. Our vitamin C formula is very very stable and goes for upto 2 years without turning brown or oxidising. It is very effective for skin brightening and reducing hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
Serums are applied after toners or after essences.
4. MOISTURIZERS
Moisturizing is a mandatory step in skincare routine. Every body needs to moisturize their skin. When moisturizers are skipped, the skin compensates for it by over-producing sebum. This in turn leads to different concerns such as acne, blackheads, clogged pores, congested skin and whiteheads. No matter what your skin type is you need a moisturizer.
Moisturizers come in form of creams and lotions and some moisturizers have added ingredients for extra benefits. For example in our
Facial Cream we add Hyaluronic acid to help keep the skin plump and radiant.
5. FACE MASKS
Masking is another really important step in skincare. Face masks help deep cleanse the skin, unclog pores, soften and smoothen rough skin, and it also helps reduce appearance of pores.
Different masks are designed for different function. Our
glow face mask also helps get rid of hyperpigmentation & dark spots and our
Detox Face Mask helps keep acne at bay.
6. EXFOLIANTS
Exfoliating is the act of getting rid of dead skin cells from your skin. There are two types of exfoliants.
· Physical Exfoliation where you use a rough substance to physically scrub off the dead skin cells. This is by using for example our brightening scrub.
Exfoliating the skin helps improve cell turnover which in turn leads to a less blemished skin. Exfoliating also helps soften the skin and makes the skin complexion brighter.
7. SUNSCREEN
Sunscreen protects the skin against harmful UV rays. It reduces the risk of skin cancer, it prevents pre-mature aging and protects the skin against free radicals.
